Established in 1999, the Judicial Fellowship International for Law Students 2023-24 Programme, previously known as the University Traineeship Programme, provides recent law graduates with the opportunity to gain professional experience at the International Court of Justice. The primary goal of the program is to enhance participants’ practical understanding of public international law and the Court’s procedures by actively involving them in the Court’s activities.

During the fellowship, participants, known as Judicial Fellows, work on a full-time basis under the guidance of a Member of the Court, alongside the Member’s main legal assistant. Judicial Fellows are involved in various tasks, including conducting research, drafting memorandums on legal or factual questions related to pending cases, attending hearings and sittings, and undertaking other duties assigned by their respective judges. The fellowship spans approximately ten months, from early September to June of the following year. Typically, the Court selects 15 participants nominated by universities worldwide.

Eligibility Criteria : 

  • Eligibility : Candidates must be 31 years old or younger at the fellowship’s commencement, with the possibility of waiving this requirement in special circumstances.
  • Academic Excellence : Demonstrated outstanding results in legal studies.
  • Interest in Public International Law : Candidates should showcase a keen interest in public international law through their studies, publications, and/or work experience.
  • Language Proficiency : A high level of proficiency in at least one of the Court’s official languages (English or French) is required, with a working knowledge of the other language considered advantageous.
